Budget to allocate funds for improving school infrastructure

The Education Ministry has sought an allocation of more than Rs 600 million from next year’s budget to improve infrastructure facilities in schools.

Education Minister Susil Premajayantha said the proposals have been sent to the Treasury seeking the allocation to be included in the budget which is due to be presented in Parliament later this year.

He said that the funds have been sought to renovate or complete school buildings, and provide desks, chairs and lab facilities, and other maintenance work.

The Minister said, however, that no new projects will be undertaken.

Minister Premajayantha said that due to the Covid19 situation the maintenance of schools had been neglected, and therefore an additional allocation has been sought.

Meanwhile Treasury sources said that the Health and Education Ministries are likely to receive the same allocations they received, but it was very unlikely funds would be available for new buildings. -DWI
