An artistic coming of age
View(s):- Faculty of Visual Arts Colombo’s graduation show

Amidst stunning avant garde couture gowns and vast abstract sculptures made of bamboo, while passing through lots of postmodernist art, it was a celebration of ‘Generation Z’ and their artistic coming of age when the Faculty of Visual Arts Colombo presented the 2023 graduation show at the J.D.A. Perera Gallery.
Encompassing all nine departments – Painting, Sculpture, Visual Communication Design, Printmaking, Multi-disciplinary Design, Ceramic Art, Textile and Wearable Arts, Multimedia Arts, and History and Art Theory – it was a glorious celebration from the whimsical and commercial to the kind that makes you ponder deep.
Madhura Kalupahna (28) did a massive print on canvas – inspired by the Aragalaya. “Printmaking in Sri Lanka is mainly on paper. The graduation show helped me take the art to people,” he said.
Twent-eight-year-old Harshana Weliwattage’s triad of pieces look at how sex is a natural act: cacti oozing semen; broken eggs symbolizing abortion and trees in embrace.
Wathsala Weerasinghe (25) created one of the avant garde dresses on display and said the exhibition will help her brand grow.
It was a major platform for students and a resounding success as all of those visiting including ‘collectors and industry people’ were rather enthusiastic, said the Curator Dr Priyantha Udagedara.
The exhibition ended on September 20.
