Cattle running out of grazing land in drought-hit areas

View(s):

The prevailing drought in some parts of the country has not only affected people but also animals such as cows and buffaloes who have lost their grazing lands.

The situation has hit the dairy industry too.

In the Thirukkovil area of the Ampara district the Vattamaddu grazing land is drying up with little grass left for cattle.

Milk production too has dropped sharply as a result.

About 32,000 buffaloes who are generally released to the lands before the harvesting period have been affected.

Cattle owners are forced to find grazing land in other areas such as Bakmitiyawa and Thimbirigolla areas close to the Vammiady tank. But there’s little relief there too as the water level has dropped by 10 ft while another tank Kokkulwa has dried up affecting the grazing land closeby.
