VTA to focus on job demands from countries such as South Korea, Oman: Chairman tells COPE
View(s):Thirty five thousand students have been recruited to courses conducted by the Vocational Training Authority (VTA) targeting the domestic and foreign job markets this year, VTA Chairman Air Vice Marshal (retired) Prasanna Ranasinghe said this week.
Addressing the Committee on Public Enterprises (COPE) on August 9 he said that a programme to improve domestic and foreign job markets where candidates will be provided with an internationally recognised certificate has been recommended.
He further added that the VTA will be working according to the job demands from countries such as South Korea, Oman and other countries, paying more attention to areas where the job demand is high.
It was also revealed that an agreement with the Foreign Employment Bureau is currently in place where information of nearly 2,000 skilled workers have been provided.
COPE Chairman Prof Ranjith Bandara highlighted the importance of directing school dropouts, giving them exposure to vocational training. A novel programme was launched, hosted by the Education Ministry, at Dharmaraja College, Kandy.
Issues such as the insufficient salaries of course instructors, and consultants leaving the service as a result, were discussed during the meeting. Salary increments paid using finances collected via courses of the Authority (a fee levying system) and initiating a new programme to train counselors, providing them with professional qualifications were proposed as recommendations. The need to upgrade to income-generating institutions rather than being dependent on the Treasury was raised.
Education Ministry Secretary Nihal Ranasinghe, State Minister of Mass Media Shantha Bandara, Members of Parliament Dayasiri Jayasekara, Eran Wickramaratne, Jagath Kumara Sumithraarachchi, Sudarshana Denipitiya, Rajika Wickremesinghe, Madhura Withanage were present at the committee meeting. (DW)
