Don’t be alarmed if you suspect leprosy, seek treatment: Expert
View(s):More than 500 leprosy cases have been reported in recent months with a majority of the patients from the Colombo district, Anti- Leprosy Unit director Dr. Prasaad Ranaweera said.
He said 200 patients were reported from the Colombo district, 102 from the Gampaha district and 78 from Kalutara district. Fifty six patients were reported from Kurunegala, while 52 were reported from Galle. Polonnaruwa district too reported 26, while 15 patients were reported from Kandy District.
Dr. Ranaweera urged people not to be alarmed by leprosy as treatment was available. He said that people should go to the Anti-Leprosy Unit if they notice distinct patches on their skin.
For patients in outstation areas, Dr. Ranaweera advised them to go to Dermatology clinics at the nearest hospital and seek treatment.
He said that a World Health Organization-sponsored awareness programme on leprosy will be held soon.
