Idling compost machine attracts garbage

The composting machine given to Public Health Inspectors in the Galle Municipal Council which was neglected for over four years will now be handed over to the Engineering Division of the same council.

This decision was taken at the District Development Committee meeting.

Parliamentarian Vajira Abeywardena said he was receiving complaints from Heenpandalama villagers that 300 families are affected as the composting machine given to them during his tenure as Minister of Public Administration had been left out of use.

The minister said the villagers complained that the area where the machine was had become a garbage dump as 50 tons of organic garbage was brought there daily to create fertiliser. The machine was neglected allowing the accumulation of garbage. Mr Abeywardena added that the villagers had repeatedly complained to him of the unhygienic situation they faced.

Mr Abeywardena said he had imported 14 Kawashima composting machines and distributed them to major cities in Sri Lanka. He added that the Galle Municipal Council should be responsible over the inaction of the machine.

The machine was handed over to Public Health Inspectors in 2018 even though it should have been given to the Engineering Division of the Municipal Council, Chief PHI of Galle K M C Liyanage said.

The machine, which was fixed at Heenpandalama at a cost of 2 million, had not been functioning optimally for four years.

Mr Liyanage said that as labourers fail to work properly only 5,000 kg of organic fertiliser could be produced during the four-year period. He said PHIs are unable to operate the machine and therefore they had handed it over to the Engineering Division via a letter issued from the Municipal Commissioner on August 13.
