The Meteorological Department has warned of more rains and thundershowers in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Southern, and North-Western provinces and in the Kandy and Nuwara Eliya districts.

The maximum rainfall of 138.5mm was recorded in Colombo Fort area.

Meanwhile water levels of Nilwala ganga Kalu ganga and Gin ganga have risen, and people living in low-lying areas have been asked to be on alert for signs of flooding. The National Building Research Organisation has issued landslide early warnings to seven districts: Galle, Hambantota, Kalutara, Kandy, Kegalle, Matara, and Ratnapura. The Disaster Management Centre (DMC) has asked the public to call 117 in case of any emergency.

The Irrigation Department has warned that the Nilwala Ganga has reached flood level and of the possibility of severe floods in several low-lying areas. People living in Akuressa, Thihagoda, Kamburupitiya Matara, and Devinuwara divisional secretariat divisions have been asked to be on alert.

Minor flooding was reported in some of the low-lying areas of Aththanagalla Oya basin in Gampaha.

However, some parts of the country are not receiving sufficient rains, and people have been asked to use irrigation water sparingly.

The water levels in reservoirs near power plants have increased considerably. Laxapana, Castlereagh, and Maussakele reservoirs, in particular, have recorded sufficient water levels. Castlereagh reservoir’s capacity is at 60%, while the Maussakele reservoir is at 70%. However, water levels at Samanalawewa and Udawalawa remain low.

Meanwhile an amber warning of possible floods in low-lying areas of the Gin Ganga valley situated in Welivitiya Divithura, Baddegama, Niyagama, Neluwa, Tawalama, Nagoda, and Elpitiya has been issued.

Disaster Management Centre’s Galle office has warned that flooding is still prevailing in Baddegama. While the Disaster Management Centre-Kalutara has warned that many roads in Walallawita, Palinda Nuwara, Bulathsinhala, and Bandaragama were inundated.

People living in Palindanuwara, Agalawatte, Baduraliya, Ingiriya, and downstream have been advised by the DMC to be on alert for the possibility of rising water levels in the Gin Ganga river as two spill gates at the Kukuleganga reservoir have been opened due to rising water levels after the catchment areas experienced a rainfall of more than 70 mm.

Meanwhile paddy and chena cultivations in several areas have been completely destroyed due to the recently experienced inclement weather.

Cultivators in Walawala in the Wilpita agricultural area of Athuraliya Divisional Secretariat Division said that 250 acres of land have been severely destroyed by floods, affecting more than 200 families.
