Motor Traders want to ask President to reconsider zero tariff on EVs

The Ceylon Motor Traders Association (CMTA) has sought a meeting with President Ranil Wickremesinghe to raise concerns on a proposal to permit a zero customs tariff on the CIF value to import electric vehicles with power up to 500 kW, or plugin hybrid electric vehicles (PEHV) up to 3,000CC, in semi-knockdown (SKD) form for local assembly.

Association chairman Charaka Perera told the Sunday Times that they have already sought an appointment with the President.

The Cabinet paper on the proposal had been submitted by President Wickremesinghe in the capacity of Minister of Finance, Economic Stabilisation and National Policies. The Ministry of Industries also has submitted its proposals on the project.

The Association said it was not clear whether the proposal has already been approved by the Cabinet or approval was pending.

The Association has taken up its concerns with the Ministry of Industries.

Among the concerns has been that the particular proposal would favour one company, which will be eligible for the concessions, with a disadvantage to other importers of vehicles.

The Association has not been agreeable to the justifications made in the Cabinet proposal, including the claim of value addition. They say there were many disadvantages in the proposal and that it would be damaging to the industry.
