Two sergeants and constable arrested over death of aide
View(s):Two sergeants and a constable arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in connection with the murder of a domestic aide who was beaten to death by a blunt weapon while in Police custody were remanded until September 11, on Friday.
They were produced before Colombo Additional Magistrate Harshana Kekunawala.
The domestic aide was taken into Police custody over a theft complaint at her employer’s residence in the Welikada Police area.
A sub-inspector attached to Welikada Police was arrested earlier and remanded over the incident. The CID informed courts that the woman, after being taken into custody, had been held by the Police persons who have been produced in courts.
While being interrogated by the Welikada Police, the aide, Rajan Rajeshwari had shown signs of breathing difficulty. She was taken to the Colombo National Hospital that evening, where she died. A compensation of Rs 10,000 was given to Rajeshwari’s husband by the Police, according to Senaka Perera, a human rights activist and lawyer.
He said that legal procedures were not followed in the arrest of Rajan Rajeshwari as the Police took her into custody without a complaint. The complaint was filed after her death, he said.
A team of lawyers, including Mr Perera from the Committee for Protecting Rights of Prisoners (CPRP) are currently handling the case to seek justice for Rajan Rajeshwari and her family.
