St. Sylvester’s clinch Stubbs Shield
Champions St. Sylvester’s boxing team
St. Sylvester’s College, Kandy emerged champions of the 104th Stubbs Shield Championship, organised by the Sri Lanka Schools Boxing Association, which concluded at the Royal MAS Arena Boxing Ring in Reid Avenue, Colombo yesterday.
This was the second major schools boxing title won by the Sylvesterians within a month, having earlier emerged champions of the 52nd T.B. Jayah Boxing Meet held at Azhar College in Akurana.
St. Sylvester’s, in winning the championship, ended up bagging four gold medals, two silver medals and a bronze medal as Kadugannawa National School emerged runners-up with two gold, one silver and three bronze medals. Trinity College finished at overall third after winning two each of gold and bronze medals.
This was the 17th Stubbs Shield win for the Sylvesterians and their last two championship wins were in 2018 and 2019. S. Thomas’ College, Mt. Lavinia pugilist Y.V.M. Premaratne was adjudged the best boxer while S.P.P. Angelo of St. Sylvester’s was adjudged the best loser of the meet.
Meanwhile Viharamahadevi Balika Vidyalaya, Kiribathgoda emerged champions in the Girls’ category with four gold medals as Hemamali Girls’ School, Kandy finished at second with two gold medals, followed by Koraboruwana College at third position with a gold and three silver medals. H.M. Nethmi Herath of Hemamali Girls’ School was adjudged the best boxer in the Girls’ category.
