Young Bridgetine gymnasts showcase their skills at ‘Gym for Life’ Challenge 2023

The inaugural ‘Gym for Life Challenge’ Gymnastics championship, which was organised by the National Gymnastic Association of Sri Lanka, was a captivating display of athleticism and artistry. The tournament, which was held at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium earlier this month, showcased the talents and skills of over 2,500 young gymnasts from all across the country.

The two days of competition saw the youngsters taking centre stage as they displayed their talents, skills and creativity to compete in an array of gymnastic disciplines such as aerobic, acrobatic, artistic and rhythmic gymnastics under three main categories — Men’s, Women’s and Mixed.

A team from St. Bridget’s Convent, consisting of Yeheni Rodrigo, Rachel Sithumya, Jiah Jayawardena, Shanaya Beruwalage, Aheli Rodrigo, Sayumli Abynaiyake, Eliza de Zilva, Anika Fonseka, Kelisha Fernando, Maria Hirundhi, Anukya Liyanawathe, Jenara Armstrong, Sanuthi Rajapakse, Niranya Hitheshi, Anya Fernando, Taarya Lihinikaduwa, Kenulya Jayarathne, Mariata Padipperuma, Nesandi Senaya, Mikela Sriniwas, Elisha Mangamuni, Rasali Rodrigo and Thaluni Wimalasekera, took part in the Women’s category, which had 28 teams competing for the trophy.

With a stellar performance, the Bridgetine team was adjudged as Top 4 in the preliminary round allowing them to secure a berth at the finals, where their impressive performance bagged them the second runners-up title. With less than a year of collegiate gymnastics behind them, the achievement of the young Bridgetines was commendable.

The school’s achievement in the sport of gymnastics is a testament to the hard work, determination, effort and commitment that has been poured into the sport by head coach Indika Thushara, Collegiate team coach Sachin Sulakshana, the Collegiate School Principal Rev. Sr. Sujani Fernando, the teacher-in-charge Hemanthi de Zilva as well as the amazing gymnasts.
