Sanjeewa Pushpakumara’s ‘Asu’ a film based on a true story is now being screened in MPI circuit cinemas around the country. Inspired by the story of Indiara Jayasuriya, the younger daughter of former speaker Mr. Karu Jayasuriya who died from a cancer, the film is scripted by Sangeetha Nilnadee Godagama and Sanjeewa himself while the film is produced by Sanjeewa himself.
‘Asu’ is about sacrifice and compassion of a mother who loves her unseen baby to the extent that she would risk her own life. That’s the ultimate respect for the vulnerable and the voiceless.
A 31-year-old mother, detected with a late-stage breast cancer, decides to pass on a message of love to her newborn baby.
‘Nelum’ is a Buddhist upper-class mother in Sri Lanka. She has a three year old daughter and is six-months pregnant. Nelum’s husband is a thirty-five-year-old musician.
Their happy family is shocked when Nelum is diagnosed with a late-stage breast cancer. Not wanting to put the unborn baby’s life in danger, Nelum vehemently refuses any medical treatment and decides bravely to battle with the cancer. Her decision put the doctors in a dilemma and despairs the husband, who wants to choose her loving wife over the unborn.
Nelum delivers a baby boy prematurely after seven months of pregnancy. The boy is named Gautham, after the Lord Buddha.
The baby boy is now 3 months old. Nelum’s situation deteriorates further. In the last hours of her life, she decides to write a letter to her newborn, which he would open on his 10th Birthday.
The film features Udari Warnakulasorriya, Shyam Fernando, Dinara Punchihewa, Chandani Senevirathene, Somarathne Dissanayake and Athula Veragoda.
Behind the screen cinematography by Vishwa Balasooriya, edited by Ajith Ramanayake and music direction is by Ajith Kumarasiri and Namini Panchala.
