Healthy competitions tap latent talents. September 23 saw the winners of the Inter-school Talents Competition being awarded. It was an adventurous journey of the Apostolic Carmel (AC) Congregation organised by Sr Mary Nimalka – Councillor for Education.

The Mother Veronica Memorial Inter-school Competitions were conducted at school level, province level, and national level in schools where AC nuns engaged as principals or teachers. The competitions comprised singing, dancing, oratory, announcements, creative writing, art, drama, handwork, sports, and inspirational video clips in all three languages – in primary, junior and senior categories. Nearly 2,000 students from 20 schools participated.

This was a journey from south to north, north to east that entailed commitment, discipline, and goodwill. It also enhanced perspective and creative interactions to perpetuate relationships among students. At 8.30 am the invitees; chief guest Rt Rev Dr Harold Antony Perera – the Bishop of Kurunegala, President of Bishops’ Conference, Sri Lanka, guests, priests, sisters, teachers, and parents were led by the Holy Cross Senior Western Band to the College auditorium.

Sr Mary Nilanthi, the Provincial Superior of the Apostolic Carmel Sri Lanka highlighted the need for innovative inter-school competitions to tap latent talents of children.

The ceremony commemorated the 200th birthday on October 1 of the Foundress of the Apostolic Carmel Congregation, Rev Mother Veronica.

The Apostolic Carmel Sisters are involved in the education of children, forming their characters, and instilling human values to be good citizens.

Certificates and trophies were awarded to the winners and to the runners-up.

Rev Dr Harold Antony Pereira said: “I invite religious and laity to journey together, to unearth talents of sons and daughters in our country. I am confident we can make our country beautiful in the time to come”.
