The Bachelor of Science Honours in Engineering study programme offered by the Faculty of Engineering Technology at the Open University of Sri Lanka is a well-received engineering degree programme. Formerly known as the Bachelor of Technology Honours in Engineering, this globally and locally accepted degree has been instrumental in shaping numerous professionals since 1990. Graduates, now active in various engineering sectors and in academia, attest to its recognition. In response to evolving industry requirements and in alignment with professional accreditation agencies and client needs, the OUSL’s engineering degree programme is undergoing a transition, while adopting the new title of Bachelor of Science Honours in Engineering.

The Bachelor of Science Honours in Engineering Programme is offered in the specialisation areas of Civil, Computer, Electrical, Electronics and Communication, Mechanical, Mechatronics, Textile and Clothing, and Agricultural Engineering.

Who can join the OUSL engineering degree programme?

This programme welcomes students who have recently finished the GCE (Advanced Level) examination in subjects in the Physical Science stream during the same sitting. Also, those who have successfully completed the Advanced Certificate in Science Programme of the OUSL, with subjects equivalent to those of GCE (Advanced Level) Physical Science Stream, and those with Credit (C) passes for Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry at the Cambridge/Edexcel Advanced Level Examination obtained within three years can enrol for the programme. The programme is designed to accommodate those who wish to complete the degree within a minimum period, and those who wish to work while being engaged in learning.

How are the courses conducted?

The programme adheres to the Open Distance Learning educational approach, as specified by the OUSL Ordinance, ensuring consistent and robust learner support throughout the entire duration of the students’ studies. Students receive printed self-study course books upon registration, with access to the Learning Management System of OUSL, to support continuous learning. There are a few scheduled face-to-face and online interactive sessions in each course to support self-learning. Students can always reach out to teachers for help in grasping the course content and for academic counselling to guide them through the programme.

The students need to visit the main campus at Nawala or the designated Regional Canters for laboratory work and to perform other interactive activities.

Why should you join the OUSL
engineering degree Programme?

Learn at your own pace.

The students enrolled in our study programmes enjoy a distinctive advantage—the flexibility of learning. They enjoy the autonomy to study at their own pace, while enrolling for a manageable number of courses that align well with their personal and work obligations. This enables them to plan their study time. Students without additional commitments can dedicate themselves to study full-time by enrolling in courses recommended for each academic year. This commitment allows them to complete the programme within a span of four academic years plus 6-months to fulfil the industrial training requirements.

Work while you study if you wish.

The students in their second and third years of study seek employment. The liberty to engage in work related to the selected specialization is of utmost importance, as it gives them a head start to engage in Engineering practice, which conventional degree programmes do not provide. The opportunity to engage in real-world applications and becoming an industry partner, thereby contributing to the national economy while pursuing their higher education dream makes a motivated and a focussed individual with a stronger foundation, capable of addressing future challenges. The extensive exposure to the professional world substantially facilitates their rapid progression as engineering professionals, shortly after graduation with a stronger foundation for career adaptability.

Study from home.

The OUSL, with its network of 9 Regional Centres and 18 Study Centres across the country, facilitates students in taking their courses from their hometowns. Compulsory activities, such as laboratory classes, necessitate visits to the Main Campus or the closed designated Regional Centre.

Recognition of Prior Learning.

We acknowledge prior learning at course levels and provide course exemptions up to 50% of the total credit requirement for the award. Such exemptions are evaluated to ascertain whether they are aligned with the courses offered in the study programme. Higher Diploma holders wanting to pursue a degree in the same specialisation, Engineering degree holders who wish to enrol in a related specialisation, and Engineering undergraduates from state and non-state universities use this option.

Is the Engineering degree
at OUSL recognised?

The Engineering degree offered by the OUSL is recognised by the University Grants Commission and is aligned with the Sri Lanka Qualification Framework (SLQF). The BTechHons (Eng) degree programme was recognised by the Institution of Engineers Sri Lanka, since 2003. At present we are in the process of renewing the recognition.

Furthermore, the OUSL engineering graduates are highly regarded both by the industry and the academia. Many of our graduates have successfully pursued postgraduate studies at local and foreign universities, many with PhDs contributing to the industry and academia.

How much it would cost to complete the degree?

As OUSL operates under the purview of the University Grants Commission and has been established in accordance with the University Act No. 16 of 1978, the programme expenses for students are significantly subsidized. Therefore, at the current tuition fee rate, the projected fee for the programme is estimated at Rs. 460,000. A per credit tuition fee increase of 5-10% shall be imposed each year. Learners are allowed to pay their annual dues in two instalments.

Faculty of Engineering Technology of the OUSL has programmes to suit everyone.

If you possess a GCE (Advanced Level) qualification in the Physical Science Stream or in any other stream you may choose from the following programmes:

nBachelor of Industrial Studies Honours

nApparel Production & Management Specialisation, Fashion Design & Product Development Specialisation, Textile Manufacture

nBachelor of Software Engineering
