A new Act ‘State School Nutrition Supported Fund’ will be introduced early next year to achieve broad coverage of the school meal programme by 2030, Education Minister Susil Premajayantha said.

Addressing the first meeting of the Global School Meals Coalition in Paris, the minister said the Legal Draftsman’s Department is currently finalising the draft Act.

“Of the 1.6 million primary class students in government schools, meals are provided for 1 million primary school students at a cost of 61 million US dollars allocated from the annual budget.

“Our target is to first provide meals for all 1.6 million primary class students by 2024 and provide meals for all 4.1 million student population by 2030, bearing a cost of 204 million USD annually,” the minister said.

The minister said primary school health screening will be used to identify vulnerable areas to prioritise mid-day meals. (NF)
