A memorandum of understanding between the Education Ministry and Peace Corps, an institute supported by the US Congress, to promote teaching English in Sri Lanka is to be extended for 5 years.

Peace Corps programmes have been implemented in Sri Lanka during 1962-64, 1983-1998, and 2004-06.

In 2018, a memorandum of understanding was signed between the Ministry and the Peace Corps. The two parties reached an agreement to implement a programme to improve English language education in Sri Lanka by providing volunteers for a period of 5 years.

However, due to the Easter Sunday attacks and the Covid pandemic situation, the Peace Corps was not able to implement the programme as planned. It has now agreed to resume the programme.

The Cabinet of Ministers approved the proposal presented by the Education Minister to extend the MoU for another 5-year period from August 2023.
