Safeguard schools with historic value: PM

About 800 schools built by the Lankan philanthropists all over the country have been closed due to negligence by education authorities, Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena said.

The Prime Minister, this week, urged education authorities to safeguard schools with historic value.

“Most of the schools closed were built by elites and their families who donated land and put in a lot of effort many decades ago. The majority of schools in the country were initially built on donated land with founders coming from well-known families; the government did not have many. Education decision makers, therefore, should realise the value and effort put in by those who initially built them, and protect these schools instead of encouraging closures,” he said.

The premier was speaking at the inauguration of the new Matika Matha Upahara building at Wellawatte Vaishaka Vidyalaya now affiliated to Lindsay Girls’ School. Vaishaka Vidyalaya which was established in 1935 with the support of philanthropist E S Fernando, was proposed to be closed down in 2016.

“These schools played a crucial role in our country, excelling in the field of education. Schools at the brink of closure should be protected and made use of, at least as primary schools. IT skills should be made a priority for these students leaving school at Grade 5. Students should be guided to be trilingual,” he said. (NF)
