The University Grants Commission (UGC) has requested an allocation of Rs 10 billion for the next year through the annual budget.
UGC Chairman Prof Sampath Amaratunga said the allocation is required for the construction of buildings, purchase of equipment, research work and infrastructure facilities.

He also pointed out that 2,000 lecturers needed to be recruited within the next two years, and allocations need to be made for the payment of their salaries as well.

Prof Amaratunga said if the allocations are not made they would face difficulties in maintaining universities in the next few years.
The UGC has also asked the Treasury to allocate Rs 25 billion for a four-year period in the event funding promised by foreign agencies do not become available.
Meanwhile, two other cabinet papers are pending approval: One of them is to recruit some 500 lecturers this year, and another 500 lecturers to replace those that left during the last year and this year. (TWI)
