Royden Gibbs and Dillai Joseph Rodrigo’s joint exhibition, ‘Corridors of Time’ which opens next week aims to transport art enthusiasts on a journey through time, archaeology, architecture, history, human form and culture, with an exploration of the intricate narratives that bind heritage and nature in our  island.

‘Corridors of Time’ will be on at the Harold Peiris Gallery, from November 3-5. Half of the proceeds from the sale of paintings at the exhibition will go to support the efforts and work of the Wildlife and Nature Protection Society.

Documenting our heritage: Royden Gibbs’s painting of the Delft Fort

Known as a master watercolourist, Royden Gibbs, who has exhibited locally and internationally, showcases his deep connection to Sri Lanka’s cultural heritage in this exhibition, capturing ancient temples, historical sites and traditional rituals.

Each painting tells a story, inviting viewers to embark on a journey of discovery.

Sadly, many of the sites he has painted over the years in his extensive forays across the country no longer exist. The historical value of his paintings has been recognized by the Post Graduate Institute of Archaeology as a record for posterity.

“Art has the power to evoke emotions, provoke thoughts, and inspire action,” says Royden, adding that they hope “to ignite a sense of pride and responsibility among our audience, urging them to protect the cultural and natural treasures that make Sri Lanka so extraordinary.”

An artist/advertising creative director who is constantly examining contemporary themes using classical techniques, Dillai Joseph Rodrigo’s work (seen on our Magazine cover) is nature-based. Using her advertising background, she constantly tries to communicate a message to the public. Her work has also been exhibited in Geneva and Delhi.

Dillai’s bold use of colours and innovative techniques involves using palette knives and textures to highlight her unique perspective.

‘Corridors of Time’ will be on at the Harold Peiris Gallery, from November 3-5. For more on the artists, please see: https://
