A/L exams: SC calls for preliminary objections to FR petition filed by students
The Supreme Court (SC) has ordered respondents to file preliminary objections over a fundamental rights petition filed by a group of GCE Advanced Level students asking the court to issue an order further postponing the Advanced Level Examination scheduled to begin on January 4, next year.
When the petition was taken up before a three-judge SC bench comprising Justices Murdhu Fernando, Kumudini Wickramasinghe, and Priyantha Fernando, the court ordered the relevant authorities to file objections before November 7.
Additional Solicitor General Viveka Siriwardena, PC, who appeared for the Education Minister, the Education Ministry Secretary, the Examinations Commissioner General, and the Attorney General asked the court to grant time to file limited objections.
Considering a request made by Attorney-at-Law Lakshan Dias, who appeared for the petitioners, the court fixed a further hearing into the petition for November 23.
Three A/L students had filed the petition, arguing that while examination criteria stipulated that an academic period of 495 days was needed, their academic period was cut down to 300 days due to various issues in the country. They said this had made it impossible to cover their syllabus, resulting in enormous psychological stress.
