Institute of Chemistry Ceylon inaugurated the regular batch of Bachelor of Science Honours (BSc Hons) degree in Chemical Science and the Graduateship in Chemistry (GIC) degree programme for this year on 14th October 2023 at the Adamantane House in Rajagiriya. The students were enrolled with their results from the advanced level, Edexcel, and Cambridge examinations.

Mr. Graham Marshall, a past student of IChemC who is the founder / current director at Incube Digital Consortium (Pvt) Ltd. graced the occasion with his presence as the chief guest. The proceedings of the event commenced after the welcome address by the dean, Prof. Sriyanthi Deraniyagala. The inaugural address was delivered by the chief guest, and then an overview of the course curriculum was explained by the head of the Department of Allied Science, Dr. Keerthi Attanayake. The introductory session to the laboratory was conducted by the Laboratory Coordinator Dr. Ranmal Gunathilake and the introductory session to the library was conducted by the assistant librarian, Mr. N. Mahindasiri. The ceremony was concluded by an appreciation speech given by the enrolment coordinator, Dr Savidya Jayawardena.

The Institute is offering both the Graduateship in Chemistry Programme (GIC) and Bachelor of Science Honors (BSc Hons) degree in Chemical Science beginning with the 2021 enrolment. The BSc Hons degree in Chemical Science is a four-year full-time programme designed as per Sri Lanka Quality Framework (SLQF) Level 6, to provide a comprehensive education in chemistry to all the undergraduates. This degree programme serves to improve the economy of the country, provide a means of sustainable development through manufacturing and value addition, and, on a global scale, contribute to the invaluable archives of global research in chemical science.

Further, the Institute has been acclaimed for the GIC, a four-year professional qualification for nearly fifty years. It was formally accredited by the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) United Kingdom, in 2012 and was the first course in south Asia and second in the Asian region to receive RSC accreditation. In 1986, the GIC programme was accepted by the government of Sri Lanka as an alternative qualification to a degree in science with chemistry as a subject, awarded by a recognized university (public administration circular No. 334 of 17 July 1986), for the purpose of employment.

All course components at the Institute of Chemistry Ceylon are taught by senior academics and professionals with specialised knowledge in the subject areas offered, serving as visiting lecturers and full-time internal academics. The institute is a trove of both knowledge and expertise. Consisting of a large pool of scholars and experts placed at esteemed state and non-state universities and industries in the country, the students are primed to benefit immensely from their academic experience at the institute.

The Institute strongly believes in supporting their students by rendering the necessary financial assistance, in the form of financial aid scholarships for underprivileged students, merit-based scholarships and bursaries, and sports scholarships, in the hopes of providing an opportunity for students to become a part of the Institute of Chemistry Ceylon. Thus, by doing so, it would build a solid foundation and reinforce the academic growth of the undergraduates with exposure to research methods and techniques, developing their critical thinking skills and proficiency in the chemical sciences.

Enrolment for the 2023 regular intake is open to students until the end of October. Students with an ambition and passion for becoming chemists and outstanding scientists are highly encouraged to apply.
