The tusker Agbo suffered another gunshot wound on October 28, following the first incident on June 12.
The ten-foot-tall tusker was roaming freely in the Thirappane area of Anuradhapura when it was found with a gunshot wound on its front left leg, suspected to be the result of a hunter firing a trap gun.
As wildlife department officials took on the responsibility of caring for the tusker on July 20, its recovery period believed to be around six months long, began.
In a distressing turn of events, it was shot yet again in its flank area. An official said the suspect lived near the Vannam Maduwa River in Thirappane.
“People fire at it because it poses a threat to crops, and they are unable to chase it away. Even our officials find it difficult to do so,” the official said.
The elephant was provided with fruits and paddy while it was being treated for its previous injury due to mobility issues. However, as the animal had become used to being fed by people, it had begun to venture near villages in search of food.
The official said discussions were underway to take measures to confine the tusker to a particular area, while they were also attempting to allow it to settle into a natural diet of grasses, leaves, shoots, barks, and other vegetation.
“The second set of shotgun wounds are not major wounds, and its front leg wound is 90% healed, although it oozes out occasionally. However, the tusker is still under threat,” he added.
