Committee to recommend relief for death-row inmates and those serving life sentences

Justice Minister Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe has appointed a committee to examine and submit recommendations on the possibility of providing relief to inmates who are currently on death row or are serving life sentences.

The committee is headed by former High Court Judge Sisira Kumara Ratnayake. Other members of the committee are former High Court Judge Ajith Masinghe, Additional Secretary to the Ministry of Justice R.P.S. Saman Kumari, Commissioner General of Prisons Thushara Upuldeniya, Senior Deputy Inspector General (SDIG) of Police K.V.D.S. Karavita and Attorney-at-Law Sumanapala Keeragala.

The committee’s task would be to submit recommendations to the President in terms of powers vested with him under Article 34 of the Constitution to take action on any offender convicted of an offence by a Sri Lankan Court.
