More post office buildings for hotel projects
Two more post office buildings in Diyatalawa and Galle and three more ancient buildings in Kandy and Nuwara Eliya are to be offered for hotel projects through the Urban Development Authority (UDA) in addition to the historic Nuwara Eliya post office.
The income generated from the post office buildings offered to the hotel sector would be transferred to the loss-making Postal Department, an official said.
UDA Director General Prasad Ranaweera told the Sunday Times that the Diyathalawa and Galle post offices built according to Dutch architect design would be leased out for hotel projects under the proposed plan.
The UDA has already obtained the Nuwara Eliya post office building from the Post Master General, and the complex would be renovated, allowing the postal services to operate, while the rest of the area, including one-acre land, would be offered for the hotel project.
Mr. Ranaweera said the handing over of letters and parcels and the sale of stamps would take place at the post office, while the operational part and the administrative sector would be moved to a nearby land of the Nuwara Eliya Municipal Council.
One of the special features would be that those serving the postal sector and the hotel sector would be attired in traditional outfits worn by postal workers.
Among the other buildings in Nuwara Eliya to be offered for hotel projects are the Inland Revenue and Ports Authority bungalows, while in Kandy, the Ehelepola Wallwa, a historic building, is to be offered for a similar project.
The DG said President Ranil Wickremesinghe had directed that an investor be found for the Kandy post office and for a proposed hotel project.
