Dr. Vernon Mendis’ last book launched
View(s):The last publication of Dr. Vernon L. B. Mendis, “The Gift of the Nile,” was launched on Friday at the Bandaranaike International Diplomatic Training Institute (BIDTI).
Deshamanya Dr. Vernon Mendis topped the Ceylon Overseas Service when it was first constituted in 1949 and rendered yeoman service to the country over many decades. In addition to being a renowned diplomat, Dr. Mendis was a prolific writer, focusing on Sri Lankan history, international relations, and diplomacy in particular.
His last book, which was written during his time as UNESCO head in Egypt in the early 1980s, delves deep into the history of the country and unravels its rich heritage.
Mrs. Padma Mendis,
Dr. Mendis’ wife, was the chief guest, while Ambassador Dr. Sarala Fernando delivered the keynote speech on the occasion as she focused on ‘Dr. Vernon Mendis: The Diplomat and Academic’.
The book was edited by
Dr. George I. H. Cooke,
diplomatic historian
and initiator of the Awarelogue Initiative.
