The Navy arrested two men on Friday as they were attempting to smuggle a consignment of 570,000 medicinal pills from India to Sri Lanka by sea.
The Navy said the men were close to Iranathivu Island when they were arrested.
The boat had 10 packages of the drug Pregabalin, a medication used to treat epilepsy, neuropathic pain, fibromyalgia, and Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS) and also highly sought out by drug addicts.
The Navy said the two suspects, a 33-year-old and a 39-year-old, were from Norocholai, Puttalam.
The suspects and the narcotics were to be handed over to the Kalpitiya Police.
A senior police officer said the two suspects were produced in the Puttlam Magistrate courts and were released on cash bail of Rs 500,000 each. They were charged under the Customs Act.
The officer said drug peddlers have changed the type of drugs they distribute as they are aware that they won’t obtain bail if they are found trafficking heroin.
He said pregabalin is used as a substitute for heroin, as an overdose of the drug gives the addicts a similar high.
