Inspection of school buildings following tragic structure collapse: Ed. Minister
View(s):Education minister Susil Premajayantha has issued a circular that all national and provincial school buildings should be re-examined for safety issues.
The move comes following the death of a student at a school in Wellampitiya where a part of a wall connected to water pipes collapsed.
The minister directed engineers attached to the buildings sections of the ministry to visit schools and compile the report within a month.
He also directed that if dangerous buildings are identified, they should be closed and alternative classrooms should be provided.
Some 74 schools have been identified and they would be relocated immediately, the minister said. Arrangements have been made to allocate ministry funds as soon as possible.
A senior ministry official said that national and provincial schools have been informed of the inspection survey which would be coordinated by the Zonal Education Directors.
He said schools were closed for two years and many roofs were damaged due to low maintenance which has resulted in some of the buildings weakening. He said in addition to classrooms they also have issues with parapet walls and other structures. (DWI)
