Ven. Bogoda Seelawimala Thera, Chief Sangha Nayake of Great Britain and Head Monk of the London Buddhist Vihara, participated in the annual Remembrance Day parade in the United Kingdom last Sunday.

Outgoing Sri Lankan High Commissioner Saroja Sirisena also took part.

The parade commemorates the million British and Commonwealth soldiers who died in World War I and half a million who died in World War II. It is held on the Sunday closest to Armistice Day on 11/11, (1918) when World War I ended.

It is also meant to grieve for family and friends who have fallen during wars. This year, the parade was reminded of ongoing wars in Ukraine, the Gaza Strip, and Africa.

British Maha Bodhi Society Secretary Amal Abeywardene represented the London Buddhist Vihara at the wreath-laying ceremony at the Shepherds Bush War Memorial (right). He made a reading of the Buddha’s discourse on ‘Loving Kindness’ – the Karaneeya Metta Suttta at the event.
