Plans to fill lecturer vacancies in state universities
View(s):Education Minister Susil Premajayantha said he plans to submit a Cabinet paper in January to fill 2,500 vacancies at state universities next year.
“It is essential that we fill these vacancies. We have made plans to recruit the number of lecturers needed for next year,” he told Education Times.
Approval has also been given to recruit an additional 800 lecturers to fill the positions left vacant due to retirements and deaths of lecturers, as well as to replace those who have gone abroad. These 800 were supposed to be recruited this year though this did not take place. Those recruitments too are now scheduled for next year.
Meanwhile, the University Grants Commission (UGC) said it plans to increase next year’s student intake at state universities to 45,000 students. However, in order to cover existing degree programmes and teach the increased number of students, state universities require a minimum of 2,600 more lecturers within the next two years, a senior UGC official said. “If these recruitments are not made in time, there will be a huge crisis at all universities,” warned the official. – DW
