Well known musician/saxophonist and music composer Kavishan Jayasooriya, popularly branded by his stage name ‘Kavee Sax’, has established himself as a prominent figure in the world of music. Born into a family with a rich musical background from Gampaha, Kavee’s passion for music began in his early childhood. His journey from a young enthusiast to a skilled musician reflects his dedication and love for the art.
Kavee’s initial steps into the world of music were guided by his father, Janaka Jayasooriya, a former senior music instructor in the Sri Lanka Police Band and the head of the esteemed ‘Rithma Music Academy’. Under his father’s tutelage, Kavee was introduced to the fundamentals of music, setting the stage for a musical journey that would evolve over time. With unwavering support from his mother and younger brother, Kavee found the strength to pursue his musical dreams. Growing up in a family where music flowed in their veins, he considers himself fortunate to have been born into such an environment.
Kavee’s early musical education primarily centred around piano, which laid the foundation for his future musical pursuits. With a curious mind and an eagerness to explore different instruments, he delved into the realms of guitar, violin, and trumpet before finally discovering his true calling – the saxophone. Gifted with a tenor saxophone by his elder brother Shehan Jayasooriya, Kavee found the turning point of his musical journey, a moment that would shape his career.
The saxophone became Kavee’s muse, and he embraced it wholeheartedly, soon expanding his collection to include the tenor, alto, and soprano saxophones. His deep love for jazz music drove him to master the art of performing standard jazz tunes and blues with bebop improvisation, marking the beginning of a new chapter in his musical expedition.
To further enhance his skills and knowledge, Kavee pursued ABRSM music exams and a jazz music diploma from the prestigious Music Matters Academy. These experiences provided him with the expertise to mesmerize audiences with his enchanting performances, using various saxophones depending on the nature of the tunes.
Kavee Sax is a versatile musician, showcasing his talents across a wide range of music styles, including Latin jazz, standard jazz, blues, bebop, pop, DJ sax house music, tech house, and progressive music. His performances at beach parties and DJ sax events have captivated audiences during his stay in the Maldives, earning him recognition as an entertaining and engaging artiste.
