Constable who drowned in pursuit of suspect to be made sergeant posthumously
The Police constable who drowned in a Ja Ela canal while trying to nab a drug addict suspected of thievery, is to be promoted posthumously to sergeant.
The Senior Superintendent of Kelaniya Police Division has recommended to the Inspector General of Police to promote the 26-year-old constable Krishnamurthi Pirithapan.
The constable had jumped into the Ja Ela Canal in pursuit of a 29-year-old drug addict who had escaped their clutches after being arrested for suspicion of thievery on Thursday (23).
However, as the suspect was nabbed by the Police, the constable had been caught in a current and had been dragged under water.
His body was recovered near the Sedawatta area in Negombo lagoon by Navy divers on Friday (24) afternoon.
Navy divers attached to the Welisara camp, a team of Police officers from the Kelaniya Division, Police divers attached to Peliyagoda Police and officers were deployed on search operations.
The body is currently at the morgue of the Ragama base hospital until the post-mortem inquiry is concluded. Investigations are ongoing.
