Don’t send more mentally ill patients to Ridiyagama rehab centre via courts; Southern PC writes to JSC
The Southern Provincial Council has requested the Judicial Services Commission (JSC) to inform courts across the country to refrain from issuing court orders to send seriously mentally ill patients to the rehabilitation centre in Ridiyagama, Ambalangoda, due to a lack of facilities.
Southern Provincial Council Chief Secretary Sumith Alahakoon, writing to the JSC, said that seriously mentally unfit patients have been repeatedly referred to the Ridiyagama Centre via courts, but there is no specialised area to house the patients in the institute. The Chief Secretary has pointed out that the staff too lacks the knowledge or understanding of specialised treatments needed for such patients.
The letter also pointed out that the inmates and the staff of the institute could face a serious risk of loss of life if more seriously mentally unfit persons are sent to the institute via court orders.
The JSC this week sent out a circular to High Courts and Judicial officers conveying the request of the Southern Provincial Council.
