Minister points out costs of producing graduates
View(s):The government spends over 5.5 million rupees to produce a doctor through the state university system, Education Minister Susil Premajayantha told parliament on Friday.
Over Rs 8.6 million is spent to produce a dental science graduate and Rs 9.3 million a veterinary science graduate.
“Additionally, universities spend 2.7 million and 2.1 million on producing engineering and architecture graduates,” Dr Premajayantha said replying to a query by MP Jagath Kumara Sumithraarachchi.
The minister presented figures by analysing the annual costs of each faculty during 2022.
The University Grants Commission (UGC) calculated the expense to produce an individual graduate by analysing the annual costs of each faculty during 2022, Minister Premajayantha said.
According to UGC statistics, 3.1 million rupees has been spent to produce an education graduate. Faculties spend over Rs 1.4 million for a law graduate.
Graduates in performing arts and business management cost the state Rs 1.9 and 1.2 million respectively.
Rs 1.1 million is spent to produce an arts graduate in anthropology. A graduate of sociology (special degree) costs Rs 1.4 million.
