Colombo, November 20, 2023 – Rainbow Resources Lanka, a leading advocate for media capacity building, with support from the U.S. Embassy in Sri Lanka, invites aspiring and working journalists between the ages of 18-30 to apply for an innovative, one-year fellowship opportunity aimed at nurturing and empowering young journalists in Sri Lanka.

Embark on a transformative journey by joining a dynamic community, honing skills through engaging activities, and becoming part of the future’s largest young journalists’ network in Sri Lanka.

Rainbow Resources Lanka has crafted a comprehensive initiative surpassing traditional training Programmemes, tailored to address the specific needs of young journalists by providing hands-on experience, mentorship, and networking opportunities, accelerating their careers in the dynamic field of journalism.

The fellowship is open to both full-time and part-time contributors of news stories to print, electronic or digital media in Sinhala, English, and Tamil, from the North, South, East, West and Central Provinces. Additionally, youth running their own digital news platforms are encouraged to apply, making it an inclusive opportunity for a diverse range of young journalists. This is a part-time Programmeme designed to accommodate the schedules of candidates and will be conducted both virtually and in-person.

Selected candidates will become part of a network of young journalists and embark on a year-long journey that includes activity-based training by leading industry experts on a wide range of topics, such as investigative reporting, media ethics, mobile journalism, journalism for digital media, and news gathering and reporting. Participants will also be provided skills development in leadership, communication and soft skills, community development opportunities, and guidance for audience engagement and sustainable revenue generation.  A unique aspect of the Programmeme involves providing guidance on recognizing and addressing fake news, cultivating a journalism culture grounded in responsibility and public service.

Participants will receive transportation allowances, accommodation, and other amenities for in-person workshops. Additionally, exceptional participants identified at the Programme’s conclusion may be eligible for future grants and international training opportunities.

Rainbow Resources Lanka is committed to fostering a diverse and inclusive environment. Applications are encouraged from individuals of all backgrounds across Sri Lanka, and selection will be based on merit.

Applications for the Programme are now being accepted. Interested candidates can visit Rainbow Institute’s Facebook page for more information and to apply. https://www.facebook.com/RainbowInstituteSL/

The deadline for applications is 16 December 2023.
