The British Council rewards academic excellence with IELTS Prize – six SL students awarded scholarships

The British Council Sri Lanka awarded six exceptional IELTS students from across the country with the promise of a superior university education, at the British Council’s IELTS Prize awards ceremony 2023 held at the British Council library in Colombo on Monday 27 November.

The winners were awarded up to £5,000 which would go towards their university tuition fees in English-speaking universities from across the world – helping ambitious young people turn their academic dreams into reality.

The annual competition is open to students who have applied for undergraduate or postgraduate studies -locally or overseas- through IELTS, with plans to commence their courses from January 2023 to March 2024. This year’s competition was open to IELTS-takers living in Sri Lanka, China, Japan, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Korea, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam, Bangladesh, Pakistan,
and Nepal.

Mohammed Raslan (3rd Price), Shanitha Peiris Marketing Manager Exams British Council Sri Lanka, Suhashie Thalgaspitiya (1st Prize), Orlando Edwards Country Director British Council Sri Lanka, Dileepa Gamage (2nd Prize), Dominic Hudson Director Exams British Council Sri Lanka, Benjamin Tharmaratnam (3rd Prize), Nimanthi Yatawara Accounts Relationship & Business Development Manager British Council Sri Lanka, Kushadini Mallawaarachchi (3rd prize) and Raveesha Wickramasinghe (2nd Prize)

Following a rigorous application and selection, process six winners from Sri Lanka were awarded the highly coveted cash prize :   

n    1st Prize – Suhashie Thalgaspitiya

n    2nd prize – Dileepa Gamage

n    2nd prize – Raveesha Wickramasinghe

n    3rd prize – Kushadini Mallawaarachchi

n    3rd prize – Mohammed Raslan

n    3rd prize – Benjamin Tharmaratnam

Orlando Edwards, Director of British Council Sri Lanka was present at the ceremony to hand over the awards and also congratulate the winners on a job well done. “As well as facilitating students’ academic pursuits in worldclass educational institutions, the IELTS Prize grants them the freedom to travel to new countries, immerse themselves in new cultures, and become part of a global IELTS community,” he said.
