The Colombo Law Society along with the Lawyers’ Choir will present ‘Sing This Night’, an evening of carols, fellowship, and goodwill on Friday, December 8, at the All Saints’ Church in Hulftsdorp. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the Lawyers’ Choir which was formed when a group of lawyers with a passion for music took the initiative to bring some much-needed Christmas cheer to the legal community and organised the very first Lawyers’ Carols, a carol service that soon became a tradition that is highly anticipated by lawyers and non-lawyers alike. The fact that quite a few lawyers are armed with rich choral backgrounds made the decision a much easier one.

The programme for the evening consists of carols that have been chosen for their musical arrangements and rich harmonies in four parts suited for mixed voices. These include traditional carols, spirituals, and music by famed composer, John Rutter. The choir will be directed by Vasanthakumar Niles, who along with Ayendra Wickremesekera has led the choir for the past ten years. “One of the things that makes the service interesting, is that many of the choir items are sung by the choir acapella, showcasing the harmony,” says Ayendra. The evening will also include readings that reflect on the message of Christmas.

Despite the demanding nature of their profession, the members of the choir, both senior and junior continue to display their passion for choral music and the carol service by contributing towards every aspect of it. “It is a testament to how much we truly value the opportunity to meet and share this experience together at this very special time of the year. We are blessed to have such a talented and committed group,” says Vasanthakumar.

‘Sing This Night’ takes place on Friday, December 8 at the All Saints’ Church, Hulftsdorp at 7 p.m.
