Tough tax-clearance condition for issue of liquor licences
View(s):The Inland Revenue Department (IRD) will send Tax Clearance Certificates for the renewal of liquor licences next year directly to the Excise Department after licence holders clear all pending taxes.
“The Excise Department introduced a new system this time where the Inland Revenue Department will send the Tax Clearance Certificates directly to the department after licence holders clear their pending tax payments and are cleared for compliance with relevant tax payments,” Commissioner General (Acting) D.U.A. Jayawardhana told the Sunday Times.
Accordingly, licence holders are required to pay income tax, value-added tax (VAT), and social security contribution levy based on the returns they make, and if they have registered for any other taxes, those payments should also be made to secure the certificate.
Earlier, licence holders submitted the certificates by themselves after obtaining the certificates from the IRD and submitted them to the Excise Department to obtain their annual renewal of licences.
To do this, the Acting Commissioner stressed that the department requires consent from the licence holders to send their tax clearance certificate to the Excise Department directly.
He said the new move followed a court directive.
