Mattala Airport to finalise management bids
Authorities at the Aviation Ministry currently in negotiation with bidders for the management of operations of the Mattala Airport will finalise selections in two weeks.
Aviation Ministry Secretary K.D.S. Ruwanchandra speaking with the Business Times noted that the running of the operations at the Mattala Rajapaksa Internatioal Airport (MRIA) will be handed over to a successful bidder and negotiations are underway with one such proposal from a Russian – Indian joint venture firm.
He explained that the Aviation Ministry has issued the Request for Proposals (RFP) around July/August.
Following this call for RFPs there has been four bidders that they will be conducting negotiations with.
Mr. Ruwanchandra noted that they are yet to select a successful bidder and the process will be finalised within 2-3 weeks when the Cabinet Appointed Negotiation Committee will submit their recommendation for the selection of one of the bidders.
Following this selection the total management and development of the MRIA for varied projects will be offered like establishing a repairs centre, flight training in running a Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) facility at Mattala.
Sri Lankan authorities have always been eyeing the MRIA to be run as a MRO where they will be able to attract aircraft from the region.
Further investors in the past had also highlighted the untapped potential in establishing a MRO facility at the Mattala airport.
