Education Ministry focuses on improving school system

The Education Ministry has drawn up elaborate plans for 2024 aimed at improving schools, and providing better facilities for students.

The proposals have been spelt out in the prospective plans for 2024, and the progress of 2023 was presented by Education Minister Susil Premajayantha.

Providing free text books valued at Rs 20 billion, free uniforms for 4.5 million students, Grade 5 scholarships for 135,000 students, health insurance coverage for all students, mid-day meals for 1 million students and an allowance for student teachers are among some of the targets set.

Establishing a quality education system, introducing a technology stream in the National Colleges of Education, facilitating technology education, establishing information technology hubs in secondary education, rehabilitating and improving school facilities, establishing a pirivena fund for privena education are among other targets.

Ensuring 13 years guaranteed vocational education has also been the focus of the Education Ministry.

Providing school-based grants for career development programmes, organising school-based student activities, field work, field visits, allocating daily allowances for trainees based on attendance, payments for vocational training of students and capacity building programmes for teachers are among other targets.

Providing facilities for the students with special needs and establishing a National Institute of Special and Inclusive Education are among the targets in the Special Education section. (DWI)
