US Peace Corp to begin teaching English in rural schools
View(s):A team of 23 US Peace Corps’ members are in Sri Lanka to teach English alongside local teachers in rural areas.
The volunteers will receive a three-month training in Sinhala and Tamil, and a briefing on local culture and customs, before teaching in the Uva and Central Provinces for two years.
Sri Lanka’s Ambassador in US Mahinda Samarasinghe addressing the first group of Peace Corps Volunteers in Washington DC, a 25-year-partnership and supporting Sri Lanka’s English learning development, drew attention to disparities in English knowledge dissemination in Sri Lanka.
He emphasised the significance of 75 years of bilateral relations, and the Peace Corps’ initiative, while highlighting their efforts in rural communities.
Throwing light on the Peace Corps’ history in Sri Lanka, Ambassador Samarasinghe noted its significant impact on vulnerable rural communities, enhancing their English proficiency and competitive ability in employment opportunities.
The US Peace Corps were founded in 1960 by former US President John F Kennedy, and connects skilled volunteers with host communities in over 60 countries for service opportunities. (NA)
