The project on the temperature controlled cold storage facility at the Dambulla Economic Trade Centre has recommenced after a lapse of four years. It will be ready for use by end of March next year, a senior Trade Ministry official said.

This project is an initiative to reduce the wastage of excess food brought into the Dambulla Economic Trade Centre. Trade Ministry Secretary A. M. P. M. B. Atapattu said it was halted due to the uncertainties in the country over the last four years, and now the project is almost complete.
He said the construction recommenced and Ministry officials visited the location a few weeks ago, and they were satisfied with the progress of the work.

All that was left to do, was the landscaping of the surrounding area and repairing the road leading to the storage facility, he added.
“We are hoping to open this to the people by March 31, next year,” he said. The project commenced after India and Sri Lanka signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the construction of a 5000-metric tonne temperature controlled warehouse in Dambulla.
Indian grant assistance of LKR 300 million was used for this purpose.
