The much looked-forward-to Prima Sunrise Junior Open Golf Championship is set to tee off from December 20 to 22 at the Royal Colombo Golf Club course, which this time will see the participation of over 10 overseas golfers adding colour and stiff opposition to the local juniors in the Open Gold Division category.

Prima Group Sri Lanka under the brand Sunrise have come forward to sponsor the championship for the 15th successive year that began way back in 2008, where they have been involved with the aim of supporting the junior golfers to showcase their talent to reach greater heights in the future. The championship will give the junior golfers from Anuradhapura, Welisara, Nuwara Eliya and Kandy the opportunity to show off their skills and this time with the introduction of World Amateur Golf Rankings (WAGR), a high standard of golf at junior level can be expected.

“As the long standing partner in supporting junior golf in Sri Lanka, we are pleased to join hands once again to sponsor the prestigious and important junior golf tournament,” said Sajith Gunaratne, the General Manager of Prima Group Sri Lanka.

Ranil Peiris, the President Sri Lanka Golf briefing the media stressed that Prima’s support to one of the major junior golf tournament in the golf calendar has played a vital role in nurturing young aspirants in the likes of Reshan Algama, Kaya Daluwatta, Adithya Weerasinghe, Jevahn Sathasivam, Kumar Dhanushan, Vinuda Weerasinghe, Rathis Kantha and Sherin Balasuriya to name a few who showed their class to become role models among recent youngsters.

He further stated that with the recently introduced WAGR there is going to be stiff competition in future international tournaments at junior level as most of the junior players will be seeking to participate in tournaments to earn world ranking points.

Niloo Jayatileke who has been the mainstay where junior golf is concerned in Sri Lanka, stated that with the long standing support of Prima Group, Sri Lanka Golf has been able to take junior golf to all parts of Sri Lanka and creating the format of Regional Junior Open Tournaments. The Junior Golf Championship this year will be played over three days.

The championship will be played in age group categories which are the Open/Gold Division for boys and girls of 15 to 18 years old. The Silver Division is being played among players of 13 to 14 years. The Bronze Division will see players of the age group of 11 and 12 years competing while the Copper Division include players of 10 years and under. The awards ceremony is scheduled to be held on December 22 at 3.00p.m.
