Two shops at Hali Ela in the Badulla District were completely destroyed due to a landslide that occurred on Friday evening, area police officers said.

Customers and merchants who were inside the shops when the incident occurred had managed to get out in time and save their lives.

The Hali Ela Police said the heavy rains had resulted in a landslide occurring on the hill behind a few shops in Hali Ela town, with boulders and rocks crashing down on the shops.

The officers said they also evacuated people in five other shops situated near the area due to the risk of further landslides occurring.

In a separate incident, two individuals using the hazardous bridge built across Medakandura Oya, a tributary of Uma Oya, were injured when the bridge collapsed.

Police said two women were walking along the bridge to reach their houses when the concrete slab gave way.

One woman sustained injuries when she fell on top of the stones that lay on the side of the tributary that flows below.

Haputale Hospital sources said the two women were identified as 65 and 54-year-old residents of the Medakandura area in Haputale. They said one was in a critical condition.
