Many accidents have been reported at unprotected railway crossings caused by malfunctioning signals along the coastal rail line.

Two recent crashes at an unsafe crossing in Waskaduwa, within a week of each other, have brought the issue to the forefront, sparking outrage among residents who say authorities have failed to address the problem.

On November 29, a tourist coach collided with a train. Just seven days later, at the same crossing, a car met with the same fate.

Similarly, railway signals installed at Payagala, Diyalagoda, Alagahawatta, Beruwala, Marakkalawatta, and Magalkanda are out of function and pose a great danger, residents say.
