Airmen to speed up children ward project at Apeksha Hospital
View(s):The paediatric unit of the Maharagama Apeksha Cancer Hospital will expand with a new building and playground, thanks to the Sri Lanka Air Force’s voluntary work.
The construction of the building is being funded by the Ruhunu Kataragama Maha Devalaya following a proposal by Basnayake Nilame Dishan Gunasekara.
On Friday, during an inspection tour of the site, Air Force Chief Air Marshal Udeni Rajapaksa instructed that the construction be completed in five months instead of eight months as earlier planned so that the opening of the new building could coincide with the SLAF’s 73rd anniversary.
The foundation for the building was laid on September 21 in response to an appeal by hospital authorities, who lamented the inconvenience children undergo due to the lack of space in the children’s ward at the hospital.
About 90 airmen are working at the site. They are also building a children’s park and carrying out repairs to the children’s ward.
SLAF’s Civil Engineering Section Director, Air Vice Marshal Udula Wijesinghe, is supervising the project.
