Investigations into patient’s death indicate CO2 administered during surgery at National Hospital
View(s):A preliminary investigation into the death of a female patient during surgery at the National Hospital on Thursday indicated that she had been administered carbon dioxide, said Deputy Director General of the Hospital Dr Kumara Wickremasinghe yesterday.
Following this initial inquiry and the report being submitted to Health Ministry Secretary Dr Palitha Mahipala, a high-level committee of health officials was appointed to conduct a detailed investigation, he said. The deceased was a 61-year-old woman from Nugegoda. She was admitted to ward 6A and was sent to theatre B for a breast-related surgery.
Health unions have also called for a detailed investigation into what they said was a serious lapse.
According to online medical sources, for minimally invasive surgery (laparoscopy, endoscopy, and arthroscopy) carbon dioxide is used as an insufflation gas (blowing into bodycavity). It is used to enlarge and stabilise body cavities to provide better visibility of the surgical area. Most commonly, carbon dioxide is used in abdominal and thoracic surgeries, where the surgeon may need to move various organs to get to one particular area of the body.
