Newly appointed Commissioner General of the Inland Revenue Department (IRD) W.A. Sepalika Chandrasekara assumed duties on Wednesday taking over the task of bolstering the country’s revenue by widening the tax net.
This appointment has been made by the Secretary of the Ministry of Finance on the instructions of President Ranil Wickremesinghe.
She succeeded the Acting Commissioner General Upul Jayawardene who concluded his six-month tenure on December 31, 2023.
Ms. Chandrasekara has previously served as the Deputy Commissioner General – Tax Administration (Medium Corporate, Corporate Small Entities and Non-Corporate Sector, Regional Offices and Risk Management).
Having served in various capacities within the Department, senior official Ms. Chandrasekara has a wealth of experience to hold this key position at the revenue collection authority. .
She has been called upon to take over the leadership of the IRD at a time where the government needs to enhance revenue via tax collection for financial sustainability
The new Commissioner General has the responsibility of achieving the government’s ambitious tax revenue target of Rs. 3.8 trillion with income and profit taxes estimated at over Rs. 1 trillion.
