The Dambulla Police and the Special Task Force of the Police attached to the same area were able to unveil a racket of selling imported rotten potatoes and big onions that could be carcinogenic.

The Police identified the racket when conducting raids to check warehouses and containers used to store imported potatoes and big onions.

Containers transporting imported potatoes, onions, and other goods arriving through the ports via Dambulla were subjected to a search.

The Police were able to arrest a few people such as a lorry driver who possessed a drug identified as Mawa, another who possessed a metal knuckle duster, and others who illegally cultivated two cannabis plants in a pot at a warehouse. There were also arrests made of persons who failed to prove their identity.

The Police were able to identify warehouses which were situated near the Dambulla dedicated economic centre which contained potatoes and onions that had already sprouted roots.

Police said they found persons at the warehouses cleaning the potatoes and the onions to be sold at the market. They had also detected imported onions kept in freezers that had sprouted roots and were to be sold at the markets.

Following the detection, the Police had informed the health authorities. A Public Health Inspector (PHI) attached to Dambulla Municipal Council, Yoyaan Abeywickrema and a team arrived and collected samples to be sent to the Government Analyst to see if the potatoes and onions are safe for consumption. The warehouses were sealed shut.

PHI Abeywickrema pointed out that the rooted and planted potatoes which had a green hue are carcinogenic and should not be consumed.
