Govt. approves university staff recruitment
View(s):The Government has approved a plan to recruit the required academic staff for all 17 state-run universities within this year, Education Minister Susil Premajayantha told the Education Times.
The move comes after the University Grants Commission (UGC) brought up the issue of the non-availability of staff during a meeting with President Ranil Wickremesinghe last week.
Approval has been granted for the recruitment of staff to fill a large number of vacancies.
The UGC has estimated that at least 2,600 academic staff will have to be recruited during the year.
UGC Chairman Prof Sampath Amaratunga said that a discussion will be held with the Finance Ministry on the allocation of funds for recruitment.
Prof Amaratunga said there was a positive response from staff following this week’s Cabinet decision to increase the study allowance for university lecturers by 25%.
He added that despite staffing issues they were able to continue with research programmes; while four universities rose in the world rankings.
Arrangements are underway to commence academic activities of the medical and engineering faculties this month; some of the arts faculties too will commence this month.
Prof Amaratunga said that during this year 45,000 students will be admitted to universities.
Meanwhile, President Ranil Wickremesinghe, in a meeting with the UGC, said that plans are underway to commence the Seethawaka University on IT and another campus on climate studies close to the Lakshapana power station.
