Countdown to lion cub’s first milestone
View(s):The Dehiwala Zoo is planning to mark the first birthday of Simba the lion cub.
National Zoological Gardens Director General Ranjan Marasinghe told the Sunday Times they were discussing how they should celebrate the cub’s first birthday.
The lion cub, which will be one on March 17, 2024, was sired by Chandi. Simba’s mother Meera had refused to feed the cub after giving birth at Ridiyagama Safari Park and was brought to the Dehiwala Zoo on March 20, 2023.
The Dehiwala Zoo’s animal keepery, Eranga Shayamal Somasiri, who specialises in looking after young animals, said Simba was fed milk formula.
“As he became stronger and more playful under our care, he was introduced to the public at the elephant arena area when he reached four months of age,” he said.
Simba was at first exhibited during a morning and evening show, but as it grew, the show was limited to the morning.
He added that Simba nearly weighs 50 kilos and has grown a tawny main.
Simba, the star attraction of the show, tumbles, runs, hugs, and nips the keepers while playing with a stuffed toy.
Animal keeper K.S. Anurasri, a veteran, supervises public interaction with playful Simba. He said he spends time playing with the cub, while people watch.
